Acupuncture involves the insertion of fine needles into the body at specific points shown to be effective in the treatment of certain health problems. A treatment can involve electro-stimulation treatment, heat therapy, cupping, gua sha, massage, and exercise and diet suggestions.
Acupuncture is based on the Chinese concept of “Qi”, often translated as “energy”. Qi encompasses all vital activities including spiritual, emotional, mental and physical. It is the life force within all living organisms. There are 14 main channels of energy that traverse the body. If the flow of qi is insufficient or interrupted, an individual becomes unbalanced and illness may occur. If the pathways are unobstructed, energy flows freely providing the right conditions for an optimal state of health and well being.
An individual's health is influenced by this flow of qi in the body as well as the universal principle of yin and yang, the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water), and the 8 principles (hot/cold, dry/damp, internal/external, and deficient/excess).
